Salary: $80,000 plus superannuation per annum

Our client is seeking a Residential Care Officer to join their team in Zillmere, Queensland.

The Residential Care Officer provides person-centred, safe, respectful and high-quality support to people with disability living in supported accommodation. The position supports participants to exercise choice and control, maintain dignity and independence, develop daily living skills, participate in the community and work towards their individual goals.

The Residential Care Officer is required to work in accordance with participant support plans, behaviour support plans, medication and health plans, risk assessments, organisational policies and procedures, NDIS requirements and applicable legislation and standards

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Person-centred support

• Provide individualised support based on each participant’s needs, preferences, goals and communication style.
• Promote choice, control, dignity, independence and reasonable risk-taking.
• Support participants to make decisions about their daily routines and activities.
• Respect privacy, culture, relationships, personal space and belongings.
• Maintain professional boundaries and treat participants fairly and without discrimination.

Personal care and daily living

• Assist with showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, continence care, oral hygiene and other personal-care tasks where authorised.
• Support mobility, transfers and use of assistive equipment within training and competency.
• Support participants to develop and maintain domestic, cooking, shopping and self-care skills.
• Complete personal care respectfully and maintain participant dignity at all times.

Medication and health support

• Provide medication prompting or administration only where authorised, trained and assessed as competent.
• Follow medication charts, participant-specific instructions and organisational procedures.
• Observe and report changes in health, mood, mobility, sleep, appetite, pain, continence or general presentation.
• Escalate health concerns, medication incidents, missed/refused medication and emergencies promptly.
• Provide high-intensity or complex health supports only where appropriately trained, authorised and competent.

Positive behaviour support

• Follow approved Behaviour Support Plans and participant-specific strategies.
• Recognise triggers and early warning signs and use proactive, respectful de-escalation strategies.
• Report and document behavioural incidents accurately.
• Never use an unauthorised restrictive practice.

Community participation

• Support participants to attend appointments, shopping, recreational, social, educational, employment and community activities.
• Encourage meaningful participation and skill development rather than unnecessary dependence on staff.
• Support safe use of community facilities and transport where applicable.

Domestic and household support

• Assist participants with meal preparation, laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping and household routines.
• Maintain a safe, hygienic and homely environment.
• Encourage participants to participate in household tasks appropriate to their abilities and goals.

Documentation and communication

• Complete accurate, objective and timely shift notes, progress notes, medication records, incident reports and other required records.
• Provide clear shift handover and communicate relevant changes to the appropriate manager or stakeholder.
• Maintain confidentiality and protect participant information.

Safeguarding and duty of care

• Protect participants from abuse, neglect, exploitation, discrimination and avoidable harm.
• Immediately escalate safeguarding concerns, allegations, injuries, serious incidents and other reportable matters.
• Follow emergency, incident-management, WHS and infection-control procedures.

Requirements:

• AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma in Community Services
• At least three (3) years of relevant experience
• Current First Aid and CPR certification.
• NDIS Worker Screening Check, as applicable.
• Working with Children Check where the role requires it.
• Current Australian driver’s licence where driving participants is an inherent requirement.
• Australian work rights.
• Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with people with disability, families and professional stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a support team.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and accurate documentation.
• Commitment to participant rights, dignity, choice, safeguarding and person-centred practice.

Desirable Criteria

• Previous experience in SIL, residential disability, community support or complex support environments.
• Experience supporting people with psychosocial disability, autism, intellectual disability or complex support needs.
• Experience with positive behaviour support and de-escalation.
• Experience with medication support and participant-specific health procedures.
• Experience with high-intensity supports such as diabetes management, catheter care, continence care, seizure management or enteral feeding, where relevant.

Availability for varied shifts including mornings, evenings, weekends, public holidays and sleepover shifts, subject to roster requirements
