Our client Sydney City College of Management (SCCM), is seeking a General Accountant to join their team located in Parramatta, New South Wales.

The General Accountant is responsible for managing and supporting the financial operations of Sydney City College of Management (SCCM), ensuring compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, ATO legislative requirements, and the financial obligations associated with RTO and CRICOS registration. The role contributes to financial reporting, budgeting, payroll, taxation, and regulatory compliance, supporting sustainable financial management across SCCM’s multi-campus operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements and management reports in compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, including general ledger management, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end processes
• Maintain organised financial records and documentation to support audit, compliance, and reporting requirements
• Manage accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoicing, collections, supplier payments, and student fee administration (including refunds in line with ESOS and National Code requirements)
• Ensure compliance with taxation and payroll obligations, including preparation and lodgement of BAS, PAYG, payroll tax, and superannuation, and support payroll processing in line with Fair Work requirements
• Manage RTO–CRICOS financial compliance functions, including TPS levy calculation and reporting, monitoring prepaid student fee liabilities, revenue recognition, and maintaining data for financial viability assessments
• Prepare financial reports and supporting documentation for ASQA audits, CRICOS compliance reviews, and regulatory submissions
• Administer education agent commission processes, including calculation, reconciliation, reporting, and payment of commissions in accordance with contractual agreements and internal controls
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis by monitoring performance, investigating variances, and providing insights for business decision-making across multi-campus operations
• Maintain internal financial controls, coordinate internal and external audits, and ensure compliance with organisational policies and regulatory requirements
• Contribute to continuous improvement of financial systems, reporting processes, and compliance frameworks.

Key Skills and Competencies

• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, taxation, and statutory compliance within Australia
• Understanding of Australian Accounting Standards, ATO requirements, and education sector financial compliance
• Knowledge of TPS framework, ESOS Act, and CRICOS financial obligations
• Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
• Proficiency in accounting systems (e.g., Xero, MYOB, SAP, QuickBooks)
• High-level analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet strict reporting deadlines
• Effective communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities in a multi-campus environment.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor degree or higher qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related discipline
• A minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a General Accountant
• Relevant experience in accounting or financial management roles
• CPA Australia or CA ANZ membership (or working towards) is highly desirable
• Demonstrated knowledge of Australian taxation, payroll, and statutory compliance requirements
• Experience within or strong understanding of RTO, CRICOS, or VET sector financial operations is highly desirable
