Our client Wasp Diesel is seeking an Electronic Instrument Trades Worker to join their team in Rocklea, Queensland.

The Electronic Instrument Trades Worker will be the specialized technical authority responsible for installing, calibrating, tuning, and maintaining the electronic instrumentation, automated governors, control systems, and diagnostic telemetry that dictate the performance of our heavy-duty diesel generators and multi-megawatt power stations.

Unlike a traditional mechanical diesel fitter, this role targets the electronic “brain” of the machinery—ensuring precise data input, stable voltage regulation, flawless synchronization, and remote automation across all Wasp Diesel assets.

Key Responsibilities:

• Install, commission, and maintain instrumentation and control systems on diesel generator sets.
• Diagnose and repair electrical, electronic, and instrumentation faults in generators and associated equipment.
• Calibrate sensors, transmitters, pressure switches, temperature sensors, flow meters, and monitoring devices.
• Configure and test generator control systems such as automatic start/stop functions, and protection relays.
• Program and troubleshoot generator controllers (e.g. Deep Sea Electronics, ComAp, SmartGen).
• Perform preventative maintenance to minimise equipment downtime.
• Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs.
• Install and terminate instrumentation and control cabling.
• Test electrical circuits using multi meters, insulation resistance testers, clamp meters, and other diagnostic equipment.
• Assist with generator commissioning, load bank testing, and performance verification.
• Ensure generator protection systems (overcurrent, earth fault, overspeed, low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, etc.) are functioning correctly.
• Record calibration results, maintenance reports, and service documentation.
• Ensure all work complies with Australian Standards, workplace procedures, and WHS requirements.

Duties:

• Inspect diesel generators before and after servicing.
• Troubleshoot alarms and shutdown faults.
• Replace faulty sensors, relays, PLC modules, control boards, and wiring.
• Perform loop checks and functional testing.
• Verify engine and alternator parameters.
• Test battery charging systems and starting circuits.
• Check AVR and governor operation.
• Configure communication systems such as Mod bus or CAN bus where applicable.
• Maintain generator control panels and switchboards.
• Attend breakdown call-outs and emergency repairs.

Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

• Education: Relevant formal Trade Qualification in Electronic Instrumentation, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or an equivalent international qualification recognized for Australian migration/sponsorship pathways.
• Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on post-qualification experience working specifically with industrial electronic control systems, PLC automation, or instrumentation ideally within diesel power generation industry.
• Technical Knowledge:
• Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting industrial generator controllers (DSE, SmartGen).
• Strong comprehension of industrial communication protocols (CANbus, J1939, Modbus).
• Ability to read, interpret, and accurately redline complex industrial electrical schematics and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
• Attributes: Analytical mindset with exceptional diagnostic capabilities under pressure, safety-first operational mentality, and a collaborative team attitude.
• Licensing: A valid driver’s license is required; an unrestricted electrical licence or restricted electrical licence (REL) recognized in Queensland/Australia is highly advantageous.
